"Riposte" is an eighteen minute piece for chamber orchestra written with the aid of two computer programs. The first of these programs, RHYTHM, computed the user-defined function through which a set of user-defined parameters converted the computations of rhythmic notation. The second program, PITCH, also computed the function which through its set of user-defined parameters plotted the computations in pitch notation. RHYTHM and PITCH were used to generate fragments which were then used to compose the piece. It should be noted that the programs made no decisions concerning dynamics, articulation or orchestration. These were made as intuitive decisions of the composer.
