Abstract

A full scale proof-of concept plant for the anaerobic conversion of municipal solid waste to methane rich gas has recently been constructed in Pompano Beach, Florida. This facility has provided the opportunity to develop baseline management principles and to improve the understanding of this technology.Engineering data and technical concepts have been derived from the operation of this plant with a view that it will help in resolving the uncertainties related with this process. Some of the fundamental problems associated with the technical operation of this process have been investigated.A summary of economic data has been included to emphasize those factors which might affect the future development of this technology. Some of the major federal acts associated with this technology have been listed to anticipate issues that may hinder the smooth progress of this technology.
