Abstract

The purpose of this study was to: (1) Compare the music preferences of students in three different school systems: Seventh-day Adventist, public, and private independent schools. (2) Examine the effects of grade level and musical background on music preferences.The sample included 1508 students, from the fourth and fifth, seventh and eighth, and eleventh and twelfth grades, representing the three educational systems. The sample was drawn from 52 schools in the southeastern United States. A Music Preference Survey (MPS) was administered to the selected intact classroom and choral groups.The MPS included questions concerning the degree of preference for each of a list of ten music genres: Classical, Country/Western, Disco, Easy Listening, Jazz, New Wave, Reggae, Religious, Rock 'n Roll, and Soul. Also in the MPS was a listening section. While short excerpts of the ten genres were played on a cassette, students indicated their degree of preference on a 5-point Likert-type scale.Results revealed that there were significant differences (p < .01) in both the verbal and listening preferences for each of the ten genres when the students from the three school systems were compared. Significant differences also were observed among students from the three grade levels. There was a decrease in preference, for most of the ten genres, from fourth and fifth to seventh and eighth grades, but this was followed by an increase in preference for the eleventh and twelfth grade students. Musical background was a significant factor only in verbal preferences for Classical, Jazz, Religious, and Soul, and in the listening preferences for Classical, Easy Listening, Jazz, Religious, and Rock 'n Roll. Rock 'n Roll was ranked high in preference for all grade levels studied and Country/Western was ranked lowest.
