The purpose of this paper is to provide a study of the piano writing in Liszt's four versions of the Petrarchan Sonnets (Nos. 47, 104, and 123). The settings of each sonnet were analyzed and compared, with regard to harmonic, rhythmic and musical treatment. Pianistic and performance problems form a major part of the study. Included in the appendices are copies of the music, much of which is no longer published.
