Abstract

The purpose of this study was to design a curriculum guide for a vocal performance degree program that includes the establishment of a Western choral group within the voice department of the Higher Institute of Musical Arts (HIMA). Specifically, the two research questions were: (a) What are the recommendations of voice performance and choral music educators in selected U.S. universities regarding existing voice music performance programs and the establishment of a Western choral ensemble? and (b) What should be included in the existing HIMA curriculum to modify it for voice performance training?To obtain specific information needed for the development of such a curriculum guide, the researcher developed two questionnaires. One was sent to selected experts in the voice music performance programs of 13 selected universities. The other was sent to the selected experts in the choral music programs of 12 universities. The responses to the questionnaires, selected information presented in the Review of Related Literature, and the information obtained from the various course catalogues of 11 selected universities were the sources for building the proposed vocal music performance curriculum guide.The results of the voice questionnaire are based on the 10 responses of 13 selected experts from vocal music performance programs and they are presented in the following order: Audition Requirements, Repertoire, Learning Language, Recital, Lesson Activities, and Recommended Sources. The results of the choral questionnaire are based on the eight responses of 12 selected experts from choral music performance programs and they are presented in the following order: Audition Requirements, Rehearsal, Choral Ensemble, Recommended Sources, and Recommended Repertoire.The information that the researcher found and used for this study from 11 of the 13 selected university course catalogues are presented in the following order: Audition Requirements and Course offerings for voice music performance degree.
