Abstract

An understanding of music theory is necessary to develop music literacy in pre-college piano students and promote the enjoyment of music beyond the performance of pieces. The harmonization of melodies is an effective way to utilize the understanding of music theory to further develop music literacy. While many theory curricula provide a sequential approach of theory concepts, limited resources are available to reinforce these concepts through creative activities such as transposition and harmonization.Music notation software was utilized to create harmonization worksheets that correspond to any theory curriculum. Worksheets were saved as notation files so the user can view, transpose, and print the worksheets as needed. Worksheets are available online at the website www.harmonysheets.com.
