Abstract

Miami Suite for Chamber Orchestra is a concert work comprised of six pieces and five suites. This composition combines different cultural influences and styles. It represents how modal jazz harmonic techniques came to influence my composition. Most of Suite One, Suite Two, Suite Three, Suite Four, and Suite Five were composed for documentaries and international films. These works are intended for orchestra because, for me, the orchestral sound has the capacity to touch the heart and arouse human passion. Also, the orchestral sound has the effect of powerful imagery. This essay will discuss stylistic influences, compositional aspects, orchestration, choice of sounds, effects, and image visualization. It will also present a brief overview of those individuals and works that have been particularly influential to my music.
