Abstract

A series of Ru2 building blocks containing iodo/ethynyl groups on the periphery have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The existence of iodo group enables the Ru2 units to undergo Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with a number of terminal alkynes under mild conditions. Moreover, the cross/homo coupling reactions between Ru2 units could link multiple Ru2 cores through a variety of pi-conjugated bridges. Indeed, five Ru2 dumbbells with C4/C2 conjugated bridge ligands have been prepared and structurally characterized. In an attempt to graft functionalized organic moieties to the Ru2 cores, benzyl ether dendrons have been covalently attached to the periphery of Ru2 units via click reaction.
