Abstract

This essay follows the development of violin virtuosity from the appearance of instrumental music in the early Baroque period until the beginning of the modern era. Its main objective is to increase the understanding of violin virtuosity by focusing on the development of violin construction, as well as advances in violin technique needed for execution of more complicated technical elements. As an essential part of this project, I have performed a variety of pieces from different historical periods in a lecture-recital, thus describing the development of violin virtuosity in a practical manner.
