Abstract

This dissertation examines Frederic Chopin's use of a cadential formula involving the upper descending tetrachord of the natural minor scale. This cadential formula appears as an important feature of the Spanish musical idiom. As such, this dissertation also examines Chopin's contact with Spanish culture in Paris, as well as during his trip to Spain and Majorca.
