The primary purpose of this essay was to develop a performance edition of Witold Lutoslawski's Partita and Subito. This essay includes the composer's biography, the historical background of Partita and Subito, an harmonic analysis of the works, a discussion of selected performance aspects, including information about use of fingerings, bowings, articulation, rehearsal suggestions, and edited violin parts. Both editions include the author's comprehensive fingerings and bowings.Since both compositions are very seldom performed, this essay seeks to make these works more accessible to performers and to the public in general. The author strongly asserts that Partita and Subito are primary examples of Lutoslawski's music written for the violin, and consequently deserve a more important place in the violin literature.
