Abstract

Set in a public housing projects in present-day Alexandria, Virginia, The Complex unravels the events that lead up to the death of a young boy for which three adolescent girls are seemingly culpable. Shifting between the points of view of each of the three girls, the novel reveals how a history of economic exploitation and racial violence has contorted the interpersonal dynamics of this community. The Complex offers a contemporary portrait of a southern African American community in decline.
