The purpose of this study was to chronicle the origin and development of the Lear School in relation to its changing environment, to describe and analyze how the School has responded historically to the challenges posed by the demographic and cultural transformation of urban Dade County, and to generate a transitional plan for the School for the next couple of decades following the Lear family's direct involvement, and based on its past history.Lear was started as a coeducational boarding and day school in 1934 in a rented home in Miami Beach. At present it is fully self-sustaining and financially independent with an excellent faculty and staff and a strong up-to-date curriculum, and appears to be in excellent condition to move from a family-owned and directed enterprise to some sort of corporate structure, owned and administered by the present staff.An analysis of the School's development resulted in the following responses to several questions posed in the study. (1) The Lear School has been unique in limiting its class size and enrollment in such manner that a symbiotic relationship could be maintained among the students, faculty, and staff; and in continuing the development of a strong, cohesive faculty with a variety of nurturing techniques. (2) The major obstacle to the development of a successful independent school in South Florida is the failure to create an effective linkage among its most important components: philosophy and goals, academic program, and financing. (3) The Lear School has survived and done well in a highly competitive educational market primarily because of an effective leadership which has been able to assemble and motivate a first-rate faculty, dedicated to the School's success. (4) Lear's curriculum has kept pace with the most recent trends in both the humanities and sciences: a full roster of performing arts, language arts, astronomy, marine biology, and computer sciences is included in addition to the more traditional K-12 course offerings.
