The primary purpose of this doctoral essay is to provide an overview of different periods in the composer's life. This includes historical and biographical information, stylistic influences, and innovations with a brief discussion of the composer's works. The essay also provides a structural and performance analysis of Gorecki's major chamber work, Lerchenmusic , Op. 53 (1984), for clarinet, cello, and piano. The Lerchenmusic is an interesting work of minimalism in music. Since the composition is rarely performed and recorded, this essay seeks to make this work bettor known to performers and listeners in general.
